Robes, Rings & Revelations – A watchlist for the curious & the comforted

There are moments when the world seems to stop – or at least take a sharp, collective inhale. Today was one of those moments. The passing of Pope Francis, a deeply human pontiff with a passion for humility, compassion, and connection, has left many of us feeling a little more reflective, a little more still. And as a storyteller, I always turn to the stories that help us process history, faith, and the curious workings of power – preferably with subtitles, strong cinematography, and a glass of wine.

Or prosecco, in this case. Roy had a chamomile biscuit. We all cope in our own ways.

So if you’re feeling thoughtful, curious, or just want a reason to curl up and binge-watch something meaningful (or scandalous), here’s a Papal-themed watchlist (in no particular order) that explores the sacred, the political, and the wildly human side of the men in white robes.

1. The Two Popes

This isn’t just a movie. It’s a conversation – between tradition and reform, doubt and belief, past and future. With Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI and Jonathan Pryce as the soon-to-be Pope Francis, it’s witty, surprisingly warm, and carries the weight of something more than just cinema. Perfect for a night when you want depth… and a few chuckles between prayers.

2. The Man from Rome

A modern thriller with a cassock twist. This one brings espionage energy to the church, proving that sometimes the most dangerous secrets are hidden in holy places. If you like your Popes with a side of mystery, this is your pick.

3. Pope Francis: A Man of His Word

(Documentary)
This one feels intimate. Honest. Directed by Wim Wenders, it follows Francis through his global travels and personal reflections. It’s not just about what he said – it’s about how he made people feel. Empathy in action. You may tear up. Roy did. (He blames the wind.)

4. Pope John Paul II – A Saint, A Man

A beautiful tribute to another pontiff who defined an era. It’s part biopic, part spiritual journey. Whether or not you grew up watching John Paul II waving from balconies, this film reminds you of the power of quiet courage.

5. Conclave

This one’s for the political junkies. No, it’s not The West Wing in the Vatican – but close. It dives into the secretive rituals and rivalries behind electing a new Pope. Tension, robes, secret ballots. What’s not to love?

6. The Pope’s Exorcist

Okay, okay. This one’s a bit more Dan Brown meets demonology. With Russell Crowe in cassock cosplay, it’s dramatic, over-the-top, and surprisingly fun – if you’re into exorcisms with your Eucharist. Not canon-approved, but entertaining.

Series to Savour: The Young Pope

Jude Law plays a chain-smoking, deeply complex, emotionally closed-off Pope with a penchant for mystery and haute couture papal wear. Visually stunning, emotionally confusing, and completely addictive. It’s Vatican meets Vogue meets existential crisis. Which, let’s be honest, could describe most of us at 3 a.m.

Whether you’re watching for comfort, curiosity, or contemplation – these films and series remind us that the papacy, like life, is never black and white. It’s a swirl of sacred ritual, flawed humanity, politics, poetry, and power.

So light a candle, pour something sparkling, and let the storytelling begin.

Because even when the world feels heavy – stories have a way of holding us.

P.S. If Roy were Pope, there’d be mandatory nap times, more snacks at Mass, and daily tail-wag blessings. But that’s a blog post for another day.

xxx Ruth
